For the next six months I worked and saved and moved back into a little rental house with my family.
I exercised hard. I ate well. I slept well. And I prayed sincerely.
Piece by piece I put my life back together again.
I even managed to rescue my marriage.
And I went back to thinking about internet marketing with a totally different mindset and no credit to waste on stupid things.
I wasn’t interested in buying eBooks, joining membership sites or ‘investing’ in software (and couldn’t afford to anyway).
I didn’t care about googoos.
I subscribed to 0 lists and the old forums didn’t interest me in the slightest.
This time I was going to look before I decided to leap and when I say look, I mean get down in that water and engineer the shit out of the landing zone before I went up onto that cliff again.
I was going to put every ounce of my enthusiasm for success towards figuring out what I really needed to learn to turn my passion, my time, my money, my effort and my creativity into serious money.
And I didn’t care about doing it quickly because I just wanted to succeed.
I wanted to make a life for myself as an internet marketer with a successful, sustainable online business.
So I went back to basics and committed myself to do nothing until I was 100% sure I wasn’t going to make the same mistakes I made before.
Then I bought a stack of legal pads and a packet of pens and just started writing my thoughts, ideas, problems, successes, failures and inspirations. I went into detail on every aspect of internet marketing I could remember from everything I learned over the years.
I racked my thoughts and considered the internet – what was it all about? What did people do online? Why did they visit this site or that site and how was it making money? I even got a library card and read everything I could from (gasp) books.
And those legal pads filled up quickly so I bought more. In fact, I kept doing this for over a year because something was forming in my mind and taking shape on each page as I scrawled notes across it.
I drew diagrams.
I mind mapped.
I brainstormed and doodled.
I was a machine – connecting the dots everywhere: sales, traffic, conversions, copywriting, websites, domains, marketing, advertising, product creation, email…
I read up on all the biggest websites and things were becoming clear!
Making money online wasn’t everything I had always thought it was.
There were ‘rules’ and ‘principles’ that formed a foundation for succeeding in this business. It was more than websites and traffic. And there were no ninja methods.
That’s when I went back to the forums, back to the googoos, back to the new shiny things. But they looked different now. The gloss was missing and all I could see was the amount of crap being bandied around (but with the occasional little pearl hidden here and there in places most people didn’t even know where to look).
The picture I had in my mind now didn’t fit the crimson path illustrated on all those BS sales pages that would’ve blinded me in the past.
And it dawned on me that most people just don’t have the first clue!
Most would-be internet marketers have a pile of puzzle pieces lying in front of them and they’re busy sorting through them trying to make some kind of sense of it, but they don’t have the box with the picture on the front.
That’s why when someone offers to show them how PART of the puzzle looks (and makes their offer sound irresistible), they jump at it and take out their credit card to sign up to some new, new shiny thing.
And get led astray.
I bet you’ve bought a lot of internet marketing products.
Seriously. How much money have you spent on new product launches only to find you can’t make it work?
If you’re lucky (actually, I think you’re unlucky) you find a few pieces that fit together quickly.
Maybe you buy a course that actually works and makes you a few dollars.
(For a while)
You might even scale what you’re doing and make even more money.
(For a while)
But inevitably, somewhere on the horizon you get hit with a ‘Google slap’, an algo change, an AdWords suspension, a hacker or blackhatter, spam complaint, PayPal account freeze, the product you’re promoting becomes obsolete, the offer closes, the traffic source dries up, you get deplatformed or the affiliate program you’re using gets shut down…
Or you just get bored, or frustrated, or frightened.
It could be anything.
The point is, the strategy you’re using stops working effectively. Then you stop making money because you’re a one trick pony and have no idea what to do next.
Maybe you’re just getting started (and haven’t experienced this yet – but you will).
Maybe you’ve riding this roller coaster and you’re too busy waving your arms around and screaming (and haven’t noticed that the track isn’t finished – but you will)
Or maybe you’re sick of it all and ready to get off. To give up.
Understanding internet marketing is a puzzle but the picture on the box isn’t what you think it is and that’s why you can’t get the pieces to fit.
But who’s going to show you how to put them together?
Hell no. Sorry.
If that’s what you thought then let me dissuade you of that notion right now.
I’m not that guy.
(Not for you yet, anyway)
I mean, I could teach you how to ‘make money online’ in a heartbeat.
I could give you a link to a crowdsourcing site – you could sign up there, start doing mindless tasks and get paid. You’d be making money online.
If that isn’t your thing I could show you how to buy things cheap to sell on eBay or Amazon – you’d make a profit doing this, easy. You’d be making money online.
I could show you how to create a blog targeting low competition/high traffic keywords then create a PBN and climb to the first page of Google – you could then slap ads on that thing and turn a profit. You’d be making money online.
But here’s the thing…
If you get tired of doing meaningless $0.08 tasks, or if someone starts undercutting you on eBay (or your competitor buys from you just so they can lodge a Paypal dispute and get you suspended), or if Google susses out your PBN and slaps on a manual penalty… then obviously your income will dry up overnight.
And you wouldn’t be prepared because you wouldn’t see it coming.
Kapow. Splat. Your dreams just got dashed to pieces.
I don’t think your vision of ‘making money online’ equates to ‘making-a-bit-of-money-online-for-a-while-and-then-going-broke-ass-broke’.
I don’t think you imagine a life for yourself where you’re constantly banging your head against the wall because you can’t rely on your next paycheck.
(You could get a menial job if you wanted to live like that)
So I’m not that guy.
I’m not the googoo who’s got the magic bullet. And I don’t have any ninja methods or upsells or limited-time-behind-the-curtain webinars.
Not for YOU anyway. Not yet.
Not until you’ve done some wax-on/wax-off for a while.
What YOU need first is the truth.
I mean, I was thinking that you want the freedom to work from home on projects you want to work on, the way you want to work on them, with the income to support yourself well into the future.
I was thinking that completing mindless tasks all day long isn’t going to do it for you.
I assume that listing, packing and posting someone else’s yard sale castoffs on eBay or some junk from Alibaba on Amazon isn’t quite the right fit for you.
I’ve got a feeling that you really think that writing article after article on ‘best mesothelioma lawyers in Florida’ for a niche site is just plain wrong.
(Maybe you’ve done all those things – I know I have)
I think you’re driven by a need to find a business model that you’ll enjoy pouring your blood, sweat and tears into.
(A business that’ll give your life meaning and fill you with satisfaction)
That’s what I wanted and what I dedicated myself to building when I saw the light.
So just take a minute before you continue.
Think about what you really want lifestyle wise.
Think about it carefully and be totally honest with yourself.
See yourself living the dream. Touch it. Taste it. Smell it. And immerse yourself in ALL the emotions you experience living that life.
Are you doing it?
Stop now and take a second to close your eyes and just start to let your imagination paint that picture for you.
I’m serious, because:
I want you to get there.
(That dream life you just imagined)
And you can…
When you understand what you want.
When you understand why you want it.
And when you understand how to achieve it in a long-term, sustainable way.
See, people don’t fail online because they don’t have the resources available.
It’s not like we’re living in a time when you have to go to a college and take a course on internet marketing.
You don’t have to go to a library and read whatever books they happen to have.
You don’t even have to go to an expensive conference in some far-away city.
Everything’s right there at your fingertips, just a swipe and a tap away.
Thanks to the internet there are almost no truly solid barriers preventing you achieving all your financial dreams and ambitions.
The only bloody thing standing in your way is YOU.
But I sincerely doubt you’ve got what it takes to build a successful, sustainable internet marketing business – one that could earn you the kind of money you dream about to enable you to live the kind of lifestyle you really desire.
I doubt it because most people aren’t cut out for internet marketing.
(Or any kind of business)
Most people simply don’t have what it takes.
And this means you grasshopper.
You’re not ready.
Not until you discover what’s really holding you back.
Not until you get over it.
Not until you commit.
And not until you change.
It’s nothing to do with some method (regardless of how ninja it might be).
It’s you. You’re the problem. You’re so hardcore head down busy being marketed to as a customer (and taking the bait every time) that you’ll probably never make it as someone on the other side of the transaction.
That’s where you’ve got to be if you want to make it in this game.
I mean, just look at the screen!!!
You’re reading the words I busted my ass off to write.
Which means you’re still over there being ripped off, scammed, used, tricked and manipulated. And nothing’s going to change until you get your ass over to this side of the screen.
And only YOU can do that.
You need to take complete ownership of your choices before you can turn things around.
Which is when you can start to embrace the truth.
The truth that you can succeed.
If you want to.
If you’re willing to.
If you can commit.
And I can help you get over here if that’s what you want.
